4 Tips to Guard Your Information from Malicious Threats

It bears repeating that with the increase in social networking – i.e., Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, etc., - business owners and individuals need to be more vigilant than ever about security.

Malware producers are originating in countries all over the world, not just from a few “Top 10”countries. It is big business to try and steal your information.

Even with the best firewalls and antivirus protection, it is vital for anyone who uses the Internet to take precautions and not rely solely on firewalls and antivirus to protect you from all attempts to steal you personal and business information.

Here are four simple things you can do to protect yourself and your company from malware and other malicious attempts to steal your information:

  • Limit the information you share publicly on social networking sites such as Facebook. Are you posting your personal information publicly on your Facebook profile? Bad idea.
  • Be wary the links you click on in social networking sites, in emails and in iM.
  • Change your passwords frequently. Just how secure are your passwords? Even when you deal with reputable websites, hackers can get to your information. Be sure your password is strong, with a combination of letters/numbers/upper and lower case/symbols as allowed by the site – and change it frequently.
  • Keep your security software updated with the latest patches.
